Whakarewarewa Forest Conservation Park

If mountain biking is your thing, or you’ve always wanted to try it, then this is the place for you!

The exotic Whakarewarewa Forest provides a network of tracks through exceptionally stunning scenery that has made Rotorua famous for its mountain biking.

Rated a grade 3, or Intermediate grade, the Tuhoto Ariki starts at the highest point in the Whakarewarewa Forest, Tawa, which is 765m above sea level. The track is named after the revered and feared Tuhourangi tohunga (priest) that predicted the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption.

It runs through the native forest of the Whakarewarewa Forest Conservation Park providing surroundings not otherwise seen on the rest of the Whakarewarewa trail network.

To get to the park and the trails, head south from Rotorua on State Highway 5. About 1 kilometre from the city limits is the Waipa Mill. This is the entrance to the park. Follow the signs and directions to reach the beginning of the mountain biking trails.
