Kaharoa Conservation and Onaia Conservation Areas

New Zealand has a number of endangered birds and the North Island Kokako is just one of them. At the Kaharoa Conservation and the adjoining Onaia Ecological Area these rare grey birds are slowly making a comeback. The Kokako is possibly New Zealand’s most beautiful songbird with such a variety of whistles, clicks, buzzes and whirrs in its vocal range, one bird sounds like a chorus! The best time to appreciate the call of this rare and amazing little singer is at dawn when the forest is awakening to the gentle stirrings of the day.

Other melodious New Zealand birds can be found, or at least heard, here. The noble Tui, harmonious bellbirds, solemn Morepork owls, proud, plump native wood pigeons and even a few North Island Brown Kiwi.

The Kaharoa walking track, also known as Hollow Track, is any easy walk through the beautiful native forest to the Onaia Stream. It is a tranquil and secluded spot, perfect for picnics and enjoying the magic of a New Zealand native forest. Only 36 kilometres north of Rotorua, the Kaharoa Conservation and Onaia Ecological Areas are an excellent glimpse at North Island birdlife and native forest at its most stunning.
